Tyres, fitting and puncture repair

New tyres fitted and balanced, punctures repaired where it is safe to do so, plus a straight answer on what still has life left.

Not every puncture needs a new tyre

A nail in the middle of the tread can usually be repaired properly and safely. Damage in the sidewall or in the shoulder near the edge cannot be repaired to any standard worth trusting, because that part of the tyre flexes constantly and a plug will not hold.

We will tell you which one you have got. If it can be repaired we repair it. If it cannot, we will explain why rather than just telling you it needs replacing.

Knowing when tyres are done

The legal minimum tread depth in Australia is 1.5mm, but grip in the wet falls off well before that. Tread depth is only part of it. We also look at:

  • Uneven wear, which usually points to alignment or a suspension problem worth fixing first
  • Age and cracking, because rubber hardens with time even on a tyre with plenty of tread
  • Bulges or damage in the sidewall, which make a tyre unsafe regardless of tread
  • Whether all four match, since mismatched tyres change how the car behaves in an emergency stop

Fitting, balancing and rotation

New tyres get balanced when they go on. An unbalanced wheel shows up as a vibration through the steering at highway speed. It wears the tyre unevenly too.

Rotating tyres at service time evens out wear across all four so they last closer to their potential. It is a small job that gets skipped a lot.

If the wear looks wrong, we say so

Tyres wearing on one edge or feathered across the tread is the car telling you something. Fitting new rubber without sorting the cause means the new set wears out the same way. We would rather point that out before you spend the money.

Questions we get asked

Can you repair my puncture or do I need a new tyre?

It depends where the damage is. A puncture in the main tread area can usually be repaired properly. Damage to the sidewall or the shoulder cannot be repaired safely, because that part of the tyre flexes constantly. We will show you which one you have.

How do I know when my tyres need replacing?

The legal minimum is 1.5mm of tread, though wet grip drops off before that. Age, cracking, uneven wear and sidewall damage all matter as well as tread depth. We check the lot and tell you what we find.

Do you balance the wheels when you fit tyres?

Yes, balancing is part of fitting. An unbalanced wheel vibrates through the steering at speed and wears the tyre unevenly.

My tyres are wearing unevenly. Is that a problem?

It usually means something else needs attention, often alignment or a worn suspension component. Fitting new tyres without sorting the cause just wears the new ones out the same way, so it is worth looking at first.
