Clutch repairs and replacement

A clutch replacement is a big job, so it is worth being certain that is what the car needs before starting.

We check before we quote

Replacing a clutch means separating the gearbox from the engine, so it is a substantial job. That makes it exactly the kind of work worth diagnosing properly first.

Plenty of clutch complaints turn out to be the hydraulics rather than the clutch itself. A failing master or slave cylinder gives you a pedal that feels wrong, a gearbox that is hard to select or a clutch that seems to drag. None of that needs the gearbox coming out.

What a worn clutch actually feels like

  • Engine revs climb but the car does not pick up speed to match, most obvious going uphill or loaded
  • A burning smell after hills or heavy traffic
  • The bite point creeping higher and higher up the pedal travel
  • Juddering as you pull away from a standstill
  • Difficulty selecting gears, particularly first and reverse

That last one is as likely to be hydraulic as it is to be the clutch, which is the point.

Doing it once

When a clutch does need replacing, the sensible approach is to renew the parts that are already out and accessible while the gearbox is off. A release bearing or a worn spigot bearing costs very little compared to the labour of getting back in there. Leaving a marginal one in place is how a job gets done twice.

We check the flywheel condition at the same time, because a clutch fitted against a heat damaged flywheel will not last the way it should.

Questions we get asked

How do I know if my clutch is worn out?

The clearest sign is the engine revving higher without the car speeding up to match, especially uphill. A burning smell, juddering as you pull away or a bite point that keeps rising are all worth getting checked.

My clutch pedal feels wrong. Does that mean a new clutch?

Not always. This is worth checking before committing to a big job. A failing clutch master or slave cylinder produces very similar symptoms and does not need the gearbox removed. We diagnose it before quoting.

Do you replace other parts while the gearbox is off?

We check what is accessible and tell you what is worth doing while we are in there. A release bearing costs little next to the labour of a second job, so leaving a marginal one is a false economy.

Can I keep driving with a slipping clutch?

It will usually get worse rather than better. A clutch that slips badly can damage the flywheel too, which adds to the cost. If yours is slipping it is worth getting looked at sooner.
